Following
admission, a program plan will be developed for the intern with the
assistance of the program coordinator. The program plan will be used as a
mentoring tool to ensure that interns are progressing satisfactorily in the
program. A deficiency plan will be developed and implemented for interns
whose progress is not satisfactory.
The Texas
Beginning Educator Support System (TxBESS), is
an initiative of the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC), and is
designed to provide systematic support for beginning teachers in their first
and second years on the job.
Partnerships
that include beginning teachers, local school districts, campuses, educator
preparation entities, local businesses, and regional education centers have
shared responsibility for the success of these beginning teachers.
Supporting beginning teachers early in their careers leads to reduced
turnover and a more experienced, better-qualified public school teaching
staff. TxBESS is part of a coherent, standards
based system that begins with the state student standards and continues
through pre-service preparation, induction, and in-service professional
development.
Beginning
teachers who have TxBESS support will attain
greater professional expertise more quickly than unsupported beginning
teachers, which will in turn lead to higher academic achievement among Texas
students.
A mentor
teacher, in conjunction with the local school district and "ACE" A Career in
Education – ACP, will be given an 8 hour Staff
Development training (at a site to be determined) that will identify the overall program, policies procedures associated with SBEC
and NCLB, and the TExES Exam(s) the intern is
attempting to pass i.e. domains, standards (day to day activities of intern
through mentor) during the Fall or Spring. The Mentor will be paid a stipend
of $100 to $200.
