Requirements:

Minimum Requirements for A Career in Education - ACP
(unofficial transcripts are temporarily acceptable)
 
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution; degree must be verifiable through an official transcript stating degree date conferred;
  • A minimum cumulative grade point average (gpa) of 2.5 on a 4 point system; 10% of each cohort may have less than a 2.5 GPA (must be interviewed and approved by the program director);
  • Face to face interview with Program Director and or Senior Level Staff;
  • Written essay as to Why you want to become a teacher;
  • Successfully pass the Cornel Critical Thinking Exam with one retake;
  • And adhere to the Educator Code of Ethics

Candidates from other countries must also satisfy the requirements below:

  • Successfully pass the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)) with a score of 65-78, Internet Based; 183-210, Computer Based; 513-547, Paper Based. (teacher candidates from other countries);
  • Provide evidence of "degree equivalence" from a foreign credentialing agency (teacher candidates from other countries).
 
Field Experience:
Teacher Candidates will be required to complete a minimum of 30 interactive field experiences hours; to include observing effective classroom teachers, as well as campus and or student interaction (interview principal, attend PTO meeting, attend football game, read to a group of students).  Field experiences must be completed prior to accepting a teaching position, unless hired at the beginning of the school year.  If hired at beginning of the school year, interns will have to satisfy field experiences in conjunction with the Pre-Service Academy. 

Attendance:
Attendance is mandatory.  Although there are special circumstances they may prevent a teacher candidate or intern from attending required training sessions.  Any training sessions missed, must be "made up" with the instructor(s).  In the event training sessions cannot be made up, you must attend the next sessions training dates for those sessions missed. 

Conditions of Continuance in the Program:
Attend all meeting and or workshops in accordance with the attendance policy.  In the event you fail a TEXES exam, you must retake course work relative to the area of need.  Maintain updated information with the program staff; i.e...address, phone, email address. 
 
Additional Probationary Certificates:
For those interns that do not satisfy all program requirements; to include all fees during their first year on a probationary certificate, will be responsible for completing an additional probationary year.  Each additional probationary year will include the SBEC fee of $52 and a program fee of $1000. 

Standard Certificate: 
Passage of all TExES/ExCET exams; attend all training sessions; complete 300 clock hours of training, Phase 1 and Phase 2, supervisor visits and mentor support; and recommendation for certification by the campus principal and field supervisor.
 

EC-4 / 4-8 Generalist, EC-4 / 4-8 Bilingual Generalist;
 
  • a minimum of a 2.5 gpa for 24 hours in English, Mathematics, and a combination of Sciences and Social Sciences
  • additionally for EC- 4 Bilingual Generalist: a 2.5 and passage of a Spanish Proficiency Exam (written/oral/question & answer; based on the TOPT)
 
 
8-12 certifications:
  • English Language Arts / Reading, a minimum of a 2.5 gpa for 24 hours
  • Mathematics, a minimum of a 2.5 gpa for 24 hours
  • Science: a 2.5 gpa for 24 hours in a combination of Physics, Chemistry, Biology 
  • Social Studies: a 2.5 gpa for 24 hours in a combination of History (U.S. and World) & 12 hours in a combination of Geography, Government, and Economics
